Glowing Pumpkin Decoration

A friend of mine was crocheting a cover for a glass bowl that would then have lights added to make it glow and all I could think was, “I could knit that.”  So here’s my version.

Materials:

pumpkin colored yarn:  I used some orange worsted acrylic that was leftover in my stash.

green yarn:  same story as the orange yarn, leftover worsted acrylic

needles to achieve gauge: I used 40 inch size 5 circular in magic loop method

glass bowl:  my bowl is from Pat Catans.  Bowl opening 4 inches.  Bowl height 5 inches.  Bowl diameter at widest point 6 inches.

christmas lights:  mine are just white lights that plug in, but you may want to use battery operated lights if you think your pumpkin may not end up near an outlet.

Gauge:  you should just be able to stretch your cast on row over your bowl.  If you can’t then go up a needle size.  If it’s really easy, go down a needle size.

Directions:

Cast on 36 with orange yarn.

Change to green yarn

Rows 52-54: k2tog* (4 sts left after row 54)

Cut yarn with long tail.  Run yarn through remaining 4 stitches.  Cinch and knot.  Weave in ends.  Stretch knitting over the bowl with opening at the bottom.  If your knitting doesn’t seem tight enough you could cinch the opening at the bottom after glass bowl is inside.  Put christmas lights inside and enjoy your new fall decoration.
